Perhaps the best yardstick for judging a college women’s basketball team is not how they win, but how they respond to a loss. That was the yardstick at play when the Friars took on South Florida in Tampa on Tuesday, Feb. 23, after losing to Connecticut just two days earlier. The Friars could not have responded better by registering a 72-62 win over the Bulls.

Don’t let the numbers fool you. Despite mixed results at last weekend’s Big East Championship meet in New York City, the Friars are not a team to write off. Even though the team has battled injury and illness since the fall Cross Country season, Head Coach Ray Treacy is not worried about his teams’ potential for the final meets of the indoor season and the beginning of the outdoor track season.

Exactly one year after the Men’s Basketball Team knocked off then-No. 1 Pittsburgh, the Friars once again seemed ripe for the upset against a top-five opponent. However, futile defense and stagnant second half offense allowed the Syracuse Orange to race past Providence 99-85, crushing any hopes of a court-storming repeat.

The Men’s Hockey Team snapped an eight-game winless streak this weekend, splitting a series with the No. 19 Boston University Terriers. The Friars rallied around the first career hat-trick of Kyle MacKinnon ’11 to take the first game of the weekend series, 5-4, but were unable to repeat the feat the next night, losing 2-1 to BU. PC improved its record to 10-18-2 overall and 5-16-2 in Hockey East play.
