There is a purple plastic bucket outside of The Cowl office right now. In fact, if you wander around Lower Slavin, you will see quite a few plastic buckets with varying levels of coins and even a few bills mixed in among the silver and copper. These are the fronts for the Penny Wars: a fundraising competition that will benefit relief efforts in Haiti.
In January, the College community pledged monetary and spiritual support to Haiti; hundreds of students packed in to Moore Hall to hear about the student-led initiatives on campus and over 1,100 students joined the PC Call to Action: Project Haiti group on Facebook. It is important to not lose this zeal as the semester progresses. The crisis in Haiti is not going away; the post-earthquake conditions will not improve on its own, and we ought not to lose sight of the long-term needs of the country.
Spring Recess is almost upon us, which means that the Providence College community is about to disperse to points worldwide and that the semester is at its halfway mark. When we return, the frenzy of activity to which we are all accustomed, will not lessen. As we try to keep our heads above water while coping with exams and presentations, we are at risk of losing track of our objectives. Haiti, however, is not something that we can forget about. We should return from our break rejuvenated and renewed in our commitment to help the situation in Haiti by whatever means we can.
We at The Cowl would like to encourage PC students and faculty to continue their support of the events and fund-raising efforts that will be happening around campus when classes reconvene in March. The situation on the ground in Haiti still needs the attention and energy that we promised at the beginning of the semester.
